6 Tips to begin using homeopathic remedies

updated: March 25, 2025

All to often the word homeopathy is synonymously used with natural medicine. While homeopathy is a form of natural medicine; all natural medicine is not homeopathic medicine.

The practice of Homeopathic Medicine (homeopathy) is a separate science from other alternative medicines; like aromatherapy with essential oils, or herbology with plants. Homeopathy has it's own treatments, potencies, and uses.

Like the other natural medicines that have been around way before pharmaceuticals, you can use homeopathic remedies at home to stay well, and heal when ill. Consulting a professional or classical homeopath is always a good idea, especially when dealing with chronic, genetic, or traumatic circumstances.

You'll notice I share a handful of books in this article. It's important to have more than one book, as the writers/professionals sometimes have slightly differing opinions for some remedies. It's slight, but can be enough to really help identify which remedy is right for the body/mind at the time. Plus, when using books you can highlight and jot down notes to easily access the information again.

  1. The Complete Homeopathy Handbook by Miranda Castro, R.S.Hom.
This is my immediate go-to book. Castro is a brilliant homeopath and writes specifically for the layperson.

  2. Take a homeopathy class with a local homeopath or an online course. Receive the tools you need from a professional who's been using homeopathics for years.

  3. Collect the 12 Cell Salts. These are the 12 minerals the human body is made up of. The theory, discovered by Dr. W. H. Schuessler in the late 1800's, is that illness or disease in the body may be caused by an imbalance of the 12 minerals. These remedies are a great way to begin practicing homeopathy.

Another idea is start with BioPlasma. Each dose contains the 12 cell salts. (In my family, my children - for many years as toddlers and beyond - took a single pellet once per week to boost their system.

  4. Calendula gel, lotion, ointment, or cream - or buy them all! Use this topically for cuts, burns, or rashes. No more A&D Ointment, Neosporin, Desitin, petroleum-based products, or whatever medicated stuff that's out there again!

  5. Most health food stores, drug stores and markets sell low potency homeopathic blends (30c or lower) for acute situations, like colds, flu, fever, earache, cough, teething, allergies, night-time rest, dry eyes, etc. Some brands include: Boiron, Hyland's, Newton Homeopathics, and Homeolab. These are another excellent way to start administering remedies. They are packaged with directions like over-the-counter medications.

  6. Arnica. It is the most used remedy in my household.  Arnica may be used for bumps to the head, bruising of the body, and will support healing of wounds and sprains.

BONUS: Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Postpartum Tips

  1. Homeopathy for Pregnancy, Birth and Your Baby's First Year by Miranda Castro, R.S.Hom. Castro supports women in a way that few do. This was my go-to resource for years when our kids were young in our home.

  2. Guide to Homeopathic Remedies for the Birth Bag by Patti Brennan (Ann Arbor.)

  3. Homeopathy Specifics: 18 Remedies for Childbirth from Helios Homopathy. This is a set of remedies with an instructional guide to support women through the transition into motherhood. Specific remedies for pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum are offered.

  4. There is a Choice: Homeoprophylaxis by Cilla Whatcott, Ph.D., HD RHom, CCH. An alternative path to conventional vaccinations, Whatcott shares modern research has found to assist the body to function well, and how to make critical decisions as a parent.

  5. Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants by Dana Ullman, MPH. This book is quick to investigate which remedy to use without over-thinking.

As a prenatal chiropractor, I have worked closely with Elise and many of her prenatal yoga students in the past 2 years. I consistently find that the women under my care that are also attending regular prenatal yoga classes with Elise experience less discomfort in their pregnancy, report stronger emotional connections to their bodies, and they consistently state they feel better prepared for labor and delivery. If you are looking for a way to safely exercise but also want a beautiful way to connect with your body prior to delivery seek out classes with Sweet Momma Yoga. Lastly, Elise goes above and beyond to create a sense of community for her students. She has created a thriving group of moms that support one another outside of the classes and virtually. - Kelsi McClure, DC, Lone Tree CO
I’ve participated in Sweet Momma Yoga during both of my pregnancies and have benefited each time. Even on days when I feel tired and just wanted to put my feet up, I always felt better after class knowing that I am taking the best care of myself and my baby. Elise does an amazing job of making all of the moms feel welcome and comfortable no matter what previous yoga experience they’ve had. I got more out of Sweet Momma Yoga than I ever expected, benefiting both my pregnancy and birthing experiences. I would recommend to any expecting momma! - Deirdre L., Livonia MI
